Synopsis
The NSF Division of Chemistry is committed to increasing the international reach of chemistry. The Division is currently working to expand its collaborations with other countries in Europe, Asia, and Central and South America.
Current International Collaborations:
Cooperative Activities in Chemistry between U.S. and German Investigators (NSF-DFG)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG; German Research Foundation), which are counterpart national funding organizations in the U.S. and Germany, respectively, seek to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities in chemistry between U.S. and German investigators. The NSF and DFG will accept collaborative research proposals that establish new cooperation between principal investigators from the U.S. and Germany. Projects must have clear relevance to areas supported by both NSF's Division of Chemistry and DFG's Division of Chemistry and Process Engineering. There are no new funds available for support of these projects. They will compete with unsolicited proposals received by the NSF and DFG Divisions of Chemistry. The NSF and DFG will utilize a common set of reviewers and make joint funding decisions. The use of cyberinfrastructure to facilitate data sharing and communication, and exchange of students and junior investigators are strongly encouraged.

Current International Chemistry REU Sites:
ACS-NSF-DAAD International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU)
The American Chemical Society is collaborating with the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD). This collaboration involves the bilateral exchange of undergraduate chemistry students:
- German undergraduates are placed for ten weeks in laboratories at existing REU sites funded by NSF/CHE.
- U.S.undergraduates are placed for 10 weeks in a laboratories at existing Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) sites funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
The collaboration is a new REU award funded by NSF/CHE and will begin in Summer 2007.

University of Florida’s US/France REU Program
The University of Florida’s US/France REU Program is a collaboration between the University of Florida and various universities in France. American participants are sent to one of a number of different locations in France after having spent one summer at one of the three associated REU Sites in Florida (or a year of independent research, or a successful stay at another REU Site). French students, after completing a short laboratory stay after the "Licence", are sent to the University of Florida the summer after the "Maitrise" year of study. Research topics vary somewhat from location to location, but generally involve the best research laboratories at each location and broadly focus on many areas of chemistry.

Syracuse University and International Research Experience for Students (iRES)
The Department of Chemistry at Syracuse University offers an NSF funded research program at the University of Technology in Graz, Austria. The two-month experience offers research opportunities in the areas of inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, solid-state science, chemical physics, surface chemistry, organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, materials science, x-ray diffraction, and others.

University of California-Santa Cruz and ThaiREU
The Department of Chemistry at the University of California-Santa Cruz offers an NSF funded research program in Bangkok, Thailand at Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, and the Chulabhorn Research Institute. This ten-week experience offers research opportunities in organic chemistry.
