SYNOPSIS

The Nanomanufacturing (NM) program supports fundamental research to enable and improve the large-scale or customized manufacturing of nano-scale materials, structures, devices and systems.  A key focus of the program is research leading to new nanomanufacturing methods using batch or continuous processes, and top-down/bottom-up processes and their integration.  The NM program seeks to address manufacturability challenges such as scalability, customizability, sustainability, efficiency, controllability, and yield, including of integrated systems.  Model-based experimental verification and process validation approaches are encouraged.  Basic research in nanomanufacturing tools and unit processes with in-line or off-line metrology, and robust closed-loop process control are encouraged.

The program does not support fundamental research in materials synthesis, analysis and characterization, nor in device physics and performance evaluation.

The program accepts individual and collaborative proposals, including proposals that involve collaborations between academic institutions and nanomanufacturing organizations.  Larger-scale, longer-duration unsolicited proposals that are not feasible through a series of smaller projects and are not achievable by a single principal investigator are also encouraged.  Principal investigators of larger-scale proposals are strongly encouraged to discuss the objectives, scope, research team, and budget with the program director prior to proposal preparation and submission.

For collaborations between academic and industry partners, investigators are encouraged to consider submission of a GOALI proposal.  GOALI proposal preparation information can be found at: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappg17_1/pappg_2.jsp#IIE4.

Experts wishing to serve on a proposal review panel should send an email to the program director with a short biographical sketch, contact information, a list of areas of expertise and a link to their home page.
