Please Note: Individuals considering submitting a workshop or conference proposal are strongly encouraged to contact the PAC program officers prior to submitting a full proposal by e-mailing a one-page summary of the topic and scope of the workshop or conference, the anticipated speakers, and the anticipated budget request.

SYNOPSIS

The PAC program funds theoretically motivated research on a wide-range of topic areas focused on typical human behavior. The aim is to enhance the fundamental understanding of perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes and their interactions. Central research topics for consideration by the program include (but are not limited to) vision, audition, haptics, attention, memory, reasoning, written and spoken language, motor control, categorization, and spatial cognition. Of particular interest are emerging areas, such as the interaction of sleep or emotion with cognitive or perceptual processes and the epigenetics of cognition. The program welcomes a wide range of perspectives, such as individual differences, symbolic computation, connectionism, ecological, genetics and epigenetics, nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, and a variety of methodologies including both experimental studies and modeling. The PAC program is open to co-review of proposals submitted to other programs both within the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate and across other directorates.  

Note: Proposals may be returned without review if 1) the major question concerns the organization of neural activity or brain networks; 2) the major question concerns atypical behavior in clinical populations; or 3) the proposal examines non-human animals without a clear and direct impact on our understanding of human perception, action, or cognition.

Within one week of receipt of the proposal number from FastLane, each PI must send the following two documents via email to sbe-pac@nsf.gov. The subject heading of the email should note the proposal number and the Principal Investigator. Attach the following documents prepared on the following templates.

  1. An Excel spreadsheet with five worksheet pages that will be used by NSF to check for conflicts of interest in assembling the review community.  (Excel Template for PAC).
  2. A single PowerPoint slide with (a) name and affiliation of all senior personnel, (b) title of your proposal, and (c) a very brief (1-3 sentences at most) summary of the main hypotheses and methods. The slide may only include graphs, images, or other illustrations if they appear in the proposal. You must use the template (PowerPoint Template for PAC) and name the file with the PI's last name followed by the seven digit proposal number (e.g., Smith 127999). This will be used during review panel discussions.
