AGS/Geospace Section Portfolio Review
PUBLIC INPUT REQUESTED The Portfolio Review Committee invites input from the Geospace Research community for about 60-day period from March 30, 2015 through May 29, 2015 via email to geoagsgsportfolio at nsf.gov. Please limit comments/suggestions to 1-2 standard pages, and try to be clear-sighted and constructive. |
The 2013 National Research Council's (NRC) Decadal Survey Report, Solar and Space Physics – A Science for a Technological Society (SSP/STS) recommended implementation of a new, integrated, multiagency initiative (DRIVE - Diversify, Realize, Integrate, Venture, Educate) that will develop more fully and employ more effectively the many experimental and theoretical assets at NASA, NSF, and other agencies. This initiative fits well into the NSF Strategic Plan for 2014-2018, Investing in Science, Engineering, and Education for the Nation’s Future, that recommends advancing the progress of science while benefiting the Nation with three strategic goals to guide the individual and collective efforts involved in achieving the Agency’s mission:
- Transform the frontiers of science and engineering;
- Stimulate innovation and address societal needs through research and education;
- Excel as a Federal Science Agency.
The AGS/Geospace Section Portfolio Review was motivated in part by priorities highlighted in the above documents. Reviews of this sort are necessary from time to time to carry out stewardship of the overall ground-based Geospace research program and ensure the best scientific return within an allocated budget. To enable the continuation of U.S. scientific leadership in Geospace research, and to make the best progress toward answering the central science questions listed and discussed in SSP/STS, the NSF’s Advisory Committee for Geosciences approved a Portfolio Review of the Geospace Section-supported facilities, science programs, and other activities. The Review will be carried out from February to October 2015 by a 13-member committee chaired by Professor William Lotko.
