LAND BASED

  • Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) of Arlington, Virginia, plans several 11-17-day excursions to the interior of the Antarctic continent. Travel from Punta Arenas, Chile, to Adventure Network's Patriot Hills base camp (80°20'S, 81°20'W) is via a South African chartered C-130 cargo/passenger aircraft. These various inland excursions will occur during November 2003 - mid-January 2004 using two chartered Twin Otters and their own Cessna C-A185F aircraft.

ITINERARY: A number of flights to and within Antarctica are planned, according to the following itinerary. All expeditions depart from and return to Punta Arenas via base camp at Patriot Hills. Site visits may vary depending on weather and ice conditions.

  1. South Pole – All the Way (ski trip from the coast to the South Pole): November 1, 2004 – January 14, 2005; November 11, 2004 – January 14, 2005
  2. South Pole Ski - The Last Degrees: November 27, 2004 – December 10, 2004; December 4, 2004 – December 19, 2004; December 11, 2004 – January 4, 2005; December 20, 2004 – January 4, 2005; January 4, 2005 – January 14, 2005
  3. South Pole Fly-In (flight from Patriot Hills to South Pole): November 27, 2004 – December 4, 2004; December 4, 2004 – December 11, 2004; December 11, 2004 – December 19, 2004
  4. Mt. Vinson: November 27, 2004 – December 10, 2004; December 11, 2004 – December 19, 2004; December 20, 2004 – January 4, 2005; January 4, 2005 – January 14, 2005

  • Gustavus McLeod, President of Polar Explorer, Inc. of Gaithersburg, Maryland, plans an expedition, “Team Firefly”, whereby he will make a solo flight of a Firefly aircraft to the Geographic South Pole during the 2004-2005 season.

    ITINERARY: The aircraft will fly from Ushuaia to the South Pole and back to Ushuaia. Landings are planned in both directions at Marambio Station for refueling.

    1. Expedition will be in the Treaty Area for approximately 2 days during the November 1, 2004 to February 15, 2005 timeframe.

  • Ice Ax Productions of Boca Raton, Florida plans to have a party of three will fly to and within Antarctica to attempt a new climbing route on the southeast face of Mt. Tyree in the Ellsworth Range according to the following itinerary, which is dependent upon weather conditions and aircraft availability. Draft itinerary follows:
    • Fly via IL-76 from Punta Arenas to Patriot Hills: November 23, 2004;
    • Fly via Twin Otter from Patriot Hills to base camp at Mt. Tyree: November 24;
    • Reach summit of Mt. Tyree: December 3;
    • Fly via Twin Otter from base camp at Mt. Tyree to Patriot Hills: December 17;

  • Approximately 24 passengers will travel to Peter I Island, onboard the M/V Antarctic Dream, to conduct an amateur radio expedition and to record propagation during sunspot minimum. Participants will arrive on Peter I Island on January 21 via helicopter from the M/V Antarctic Dream and depart the same way on February 3. Dates of arrival and departure and length of stay may vary depending on weather and ice conditions.

    1. Depart Punta Arenas January 14, 2005, arrive Punta Arenas February 10 (in Treaty area January 20 - February 4).
