Temperate plant species took different evolutionary path (Image 2)

<em>Micranthes atrata</em>

Micranthes atrata lives in the alpine tundra of the Tibetan Plateau in Central and East China. Tens of millions of years ago, plants in the order Saxifragales were extreme specialists, inhabiting the few cold regions of a more tropical Earth until a cooling climate opened new habitats. Researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History have uncovered an evolutionary pattern in temperate species that differs from previous hypothesis of how tropical organisms evolved. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation (grants DBI 15-23667 and DBI 14-58640).
