Chemistry Platoon - Raising GPAs, Raising Morale

When Scott Daly entered college after serving in the military, he wanted to take an introductory chemistry class. His academic advisor tried to dissuade him, encouraging him to avoid science classes because they are harder. But Scott refused to listen. Today, Scott is an assistant professor in the University of Iowa Department of Chemistry with a passion for student veterans. This is the story of his tutoring group, the Chemistry Platoon. This research and outreach program is partially funded by an NSF CAREER Award. A CAREER Award is granted in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.
