AI on Breast Cancer!

Ultrasound breast exams, while an important tool, have caused numerous false breast cancer diagnoses. A team of NSF-funded researchers have developed an AI computer program trained to see distinctive patterns in thousands of ultrasound breast images, helping physicians to diagnose breast cancer more accurately. AI on Breast Cancer!

Hi! I'm Mo Barrow with The Discovery Files, from NSF -- the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Artificial Intelligence, AI, has energized discoveries in every field, to include medicine.

Ultrasound breast exams, while an important tool, have caused numerous false diagnoses of breast cancer, creating significant anxiety and resulting in a host of unnecessary biopsies.

A team of NSF-funded researchers, led by New York University, have developed a computer program trained to see distinctive patterns in thousands of ultrasound breast images, which will aid physicians in more accurately diagnosing breast cancer.

When aided by AI, radiologists increased diagnostic accuracy from 92% to 96%.

The research team plans to refine the AI tool they use to also identify risk factors, including genetic predisposition to breast cancer.

Artificial Intelligence also shows promise for clinical trials and could lead to other, even more accurate, diagnostic methods.
