An aurora australis over the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole.

This photo was awarded First Prize in the "At a Glance" category of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics "100 Photo Contest." The entry, submitted by photographer Yuya Makino, was titled "Chasing Ghost Particles at the South Pole." The IUPAP "100 Photo Contest" celebrates the beauty of physics and the fun that can be encountered in its practice.
