Great white shark 'The Joker'
The great white shark in this image has been dubbed "The Joker" for the scar on its face and is well known to researchers. It has appeared in several "Shark Week" programs on The Discovery Channel. The image was captured near Guadalupe Island in Mexico. The U.S. National Science Foundation supports many forms of research pertaining to sharks, both living and extinct – from their biology to their habitats to their diets – to increase understanding of our Earth and our oceans.
