Reflection of Flags in Ceremonial Pole
The elevated station and flags of the original 12 Antarctic Treaty signatory nations are reflected on the ceremonial pole at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. A sundog, caused by diffraction of ice crystals, can also be seen.
Amundsen-Scott is one of three U.S. research stations on the Antarctic continent. All of the stations are operated by the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP). Further information about USAP is available Here. (Date of Image: Feb. 4, 2006)
