"Human Anagen Scalp Hair Follicle"

"Nerves, Vessels and Neuropeptides in and around the Putative Stem Cell Region of a Human Anagen Scalp Hair Follicle." This photo of a 4-millimeter punch biopsy was acquired from a 44-year-old Caucasian male, fixed and vertically sectioned into 200-micron thick sections. The sample was multi-stained with antibodies to visualize the nerves (PGP9.5, red), the sensory neuropeptide CGRP (green), and vaculature (Ulex-europeaous conjugated to a fluorescent probe, blue).

This graphic was an entry in the 2005 Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge competition, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Journal Science. The competition is held each year to recognize outstanding achievements by scientists, engineers, visualization specialists and artists who are innovators in using visual media to promote the understanding of research results and scientific phenomena.
