Electrostatic Potential of Nanowire (Image 2)

This visualization, generated by an Open Science Grid (OSG)-powered "nanowire" tool on, shows the electrostatic potential of a 26 nanometer-long, five nanometer-thick nanowire. The electrostatic potential is rendered in 3-D, as well as in 1-D, cut along the length of the wire (inset screenshot with the first three nanowire modes).

The visualization was produced by the Klimeck research group, who study nanoelectronics involving modeling and simulation that is heavily computer based. The group is led by Gerhard Klimeck, the associate director for technologies at the Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN) at Purdue University and a professor of electrical and computer engineering. The National Science Foundation-supported NCN is a network of universities with a vision to pioneer the development of nanotechnology, from science to manufacturing, through innovative theory, exploratory simulation and novel cyberinfrastructure.

Klimeck guides, a rich, Web-based resource for research, education and collaboration in nanotechnology that was created by NCN. NCN students, staff and faculty develop the NanoHUB science gateway, while making use of it in their own research and education. NanoHUB hosts over 790 resources to help users learn about nanotechnology, including online presentations, courses, learning modules, podcasts, animations, teaching materials and more. Resources for NanoHUB come from 489 contributors in the nanoscience community and are used by thousands of people from more than 180 countries around the world. Most of the users come from academic institutions and use NanoHUB as part of their research and educational activities, but some users come from national labs and from industry.
