Cosmological Density Field

A snapshot of a cosmological density field at a simulated redshift of z=5. The image was obtained through a simulation on the Kraken supercomputer, located at the National Science Foundation-supported National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) at the University of Tennessee.

The image was created as part of research by astrophysicists using supercomputers at the University of California at San Diego, as part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) project to simulate cosmic reionization--the time from 380,000 years to 400 million years after the universe was born.

The work was a collaborative effort between Daniel R. Reynolds, assistant professor of mathematics at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, and Michael Norman, physics professor UC-San Diego.
