This map demonstrates how road-building precedes a type of forest fragmentation.

The Terra do Meio is the area where Walker and his team met the KayapĆ³ Indians. The road network makes a spidery dendritic pattern (in yellow) that is accompanied by deforestation (in pink). The deforested areas have turned primarily into spaces for agriculture and ranching. This map demonstrates how road-building precedes the type of forest fragmentation that follows.
