Turkana warriors. Punishment helps sustain cooperation when fighting against other groups.

Two UCLA anthropologists analyzed warfare among a society of pastoral nomads in East Africa and found third-party sanctions for violating normative behavior helped sustain cooperation when fighting against other groups.
