Students learn about sheet metal fabrication machinery and industrial lasers
Students from the Connecticut Community College's College of Technology Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing (RCNGM) in Hartford, Connecticut, visit Trumpf Inc., a world leader in sheet metal fabrication machinery and industrial lasers, to see how manufacturers use lasers.
RCNGM, a U.S. National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education center, offers professional development for faculty and teachers that includes industry externships, seminars, workshops, expos and professional conferences; curricula in new and emerging technologies responding to workforce needs; 2+2+2 seamless career pathways; resources and leadership to improve existing programs as well as the establishment of new programs in advanced manufacturing and related technologies; and career marketing materials distributed regionally and nationally to secondary and community college educators as well as parents, industry, government agencies and policymakers. The center is funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education program.

About NSF's ATE Program
With an emphasis on two-year colleges, NSF's ATE program focuses on the education of technicians for the high-tech fields that drive our nation's economy. ATE involves partnerships between academic institutions and employers to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. ATE supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary schools and from two-year colleges to four-year institutions; and other activities. Another goal is articulation between two-year and four-year programs for K-12 prospective teachers that focus on technological education. The program also invites proposals focusing on research to advance the knowledge base related to technician education.
