Dr. Sylvia Butterfield, (Acting) Assistant Director, Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences

Dr. Sylvia Butterfield is acting Assistant Director for the Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences Directorate at the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Butterfield currently serves as the Deputy Assistant Director for the STEM Education (EDU) Directorate. Her role as an agency co-lead for NSF INCLUDES Big Idea Design Team exemplifies her ability to lead high-performing teams and organizations and her commitment to leading NSF efforts to broaden participation in STEM Research.

Butterfield has also served as acting co-chair for the Federal Coordination in STEM Subcommittee and the Interagency Working Group on Inclusion in STEM. She recently completed a one-year detail as the acting Assistant Director for EDU and has served as the Division Director for EDU’s Division of Human Resource Development (now Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM), and Acting Division Director and Acting Deputy Division Director for the Division of Research on Learning. She received her Bachelor of Science in biology from Loyola University, her Master of Science in interdisciplinary science studies from Johns Hopkins University, and her doctorate in science education from Morgan State University.
