The images were created by employees of the United States Government as part of their official duties or prepared by contractors as "works for hire" for NSF. Obligations for basic research, which focuses on fundamental scientific exploration, increased 6 percent to $31.6 billion. NCSES InfoBrief 16-311 provides a breakdown for the top six agencies that provided those obligations.
