Photo of the Hawaiian landscape

Hawaii is one of six states that received a Research Infrastructure Improvement Track-1 award. Pictured is Limahull Ahupua'a, located in North Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. In ancient Hawaii, the "ahupua'a" were socioecological land units within which an attempt was made to temper humans' impact on natural resource use with a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness between terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
