Satellite supported important research and medical missions in Antarctica for more than a decade

A photo of the TDRS during its deployment by the crew of the space shuttle Challenger in 1983. The satellite played a variety of roles during its functional lifespan, including over ten years of providing high-speed data connections for the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and the United States Antarctic Program.
