When Protons Collide: New Particle Observed at Large Hadron Collider
Search for Higgs boson reveals new particle

A typical candidate event from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment in the search for the Higgs Boson is shown. Two high energy photons (gamma rays) depicted by the dashed yellow lines and red towers are detected and have their energy measured in the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter. The solid yellow lines are the measured tracks of other particles produced in the collision.
