Long-term Study Finds That Nutrient Enrichment of Headwater Stream Disrupts Food Web in Unexpected Ways

Human activity is increasing the supply of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, to stream systems all over the world. A new sudy challenges the assumption that these additional nutrients cause an increase in production all along the food chain, from the tiniest organisms up to the largest predators.

In fiscal year (FY) 2017, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 48,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.
