Laser Mastery Narrows Down Sources of Superconductivity

Uncovering the mechanism behind high-temperature superconductivity (HTS)--a phenomenon with tremendous value for advances in energy efficiency and sustainability--remains one of the greatest and most pressing puzzles in physics. Now, using precise laser pulses and atomically perfect 2-D materials, collaborating scientists have ruled out one possible source of HTS: fleeting fluctuations called charge-density waves.
