Understanding the BRAIN with Fleming Crim of NSF and Tom Insel of NIH

May 14, 2013

Physical and Mathematical Principles of Brain Structure and Function Workshop "Uncovering the Brain: Featuring Fleming Crim (NSF/MPS) and Thomas Insel (NIH/NIMH)"

Listen to Fleming Crim, Assistant Director for MPS and Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute discuss the recent workshop on "Physical and Mathematical Principles of Brain Structure and Function" co-sponsored by MPS and BIO.

The workshop was held in Arlington, VA on May 6-7, 2013 and brought together leading scientists to identify basic physical and mathematical principles of brain structure and function. Understanding how the human brain works has emerged as a major international focus of research for the coming decade, which will require advances in structural, functional, and computational neuroscience that can only be developed through experiments and computational studies on model systems such as nematodes, fruit flies, zebrafish, mice, and primates. The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
