ASU, Georgia Tech create breakthrough for solar cell efficiency

In a recently published study, researchers at Arizona State University (ASU) and Georgia Tech revealed the fundamental aspect of a new approach to growing InGaN crystals for diodes, which promises to move photovoltaic solar cell technology toward record-breaking efficiencies. The team's elimination of two defects--non-uniform composition and mismatched lattice alignment--ultimately means that LEDs and solar photovoltaic products can now be developed that have much higher, efficient performance.

In fiscal year (FY) 2016, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
