National Science Foundation (NSF) Director France Córdova will deliver the annual government keynote address at the 2017 Washington Auto Show's Public Policy Preview Day on January 26, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Media are invited to attend.

"If the horseless carriage was the main attraction of the Washington Auto Show a century ago, what eye-catching innovations will take center stage 96 years from now?" Córdova said on Tuesday in remarks at the show's first-ever MobilityTalks International, a gathering of legal experts, industry and policymaking officials focused on best practices related to emerging trends in transportation. "At NSF, we have our eye on the horizon," she said.

On Thursday, Córdova will focus on three areas where NSF-funded research can play a significant role in expanding the frontiers of automobile-related science and engineering:

  • The future of mobility.
  • The importance of basic research.
  • The significance of scientific breakthroughs for the future of transportation.

Public Policy Preview Day provides an opportunity for manufacturers, trade associations and government agencies to offer news and announcements on the floor of the Washington Auto Show. The show opens to the public at the convention center January 27 and runs through February 5.
