Startups and small businesses with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will demonstrate pre-market technologies on June 5-6 in Atlanta. From bacteria-grown bricks and clear solar panels to custom artificial voices and low-cost pollution sensors, more than 300 NSF-funded companies will have representatives available to talk about their work.

NSF awards nearly $190 million annually to startups and small businesses through its Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program, with the aim of transforming scientific discoveries into products and services with commercial and societal impact.

The technology showcase is part of NSF's annual SBIR/STTR Phase II Grantee Conference. Startups and companies that pass through an initial feasibility and proof-of-concept phase move on to a second phase, at which point they receive additional funding for research and development (R&D). The NSF SBIR/STTR program helped tech giants such as Symantec, Qualcomm and IntraLase gain a business foothold as they developed their core technology.

The companies at this year's showcase each received an average of more than $1 million in NSF R&D funding to create a prototype and move their discovery out of the lab and into the market. Detailed information about each company and its technology is available on the conference website.

What: Technology showcase during the NSF SBIR/STTR Phase II Grantee Conference.

When: June 5-6, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. EDT

Where: Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atlanta

RSVP: Interested media must RSVP to attend. Please contact Sarah Bates at sabates@nsf.gov.
