Four-dimensional physics in 2-D

January 3, 2018

For the first time, physicists have built a 2-D experimental system that allows them to study the physical properties of materials theorized to exist only in 4-D space. An international team of researchers demonstrated that the behavior of particles of light can be made to match predictions about the 4-D version of the "quantum Hall effect" -- a phenomenon at the root of three Nobel Prizes in physics -- in a 2-D array of "waveguides."  Full Story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2017, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 48,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.
