Appointment of Dr. Juan Meza as Division Director of DMS

Dr. Juan Meza has joined us as the Division Director for the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) effective February 20, 2018. Dr. Meza joins NSF from University of California Merced where he served most recently as the Dean of Natural Sciences. Dr. Meza’s distinguished career spans more than 30 years, with leadership and management experiences working in academia, national laboratories, and industry. He served as Department Head and Senior Scientist of High Performance Computing Research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and was a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Meza has also been a member of the MPS Advisory Committee and multiple Committees of Visitors for DMS as well as served as a member of the CISE Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure. Dr. Meza has a bachelor's and master’s degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in computational and applied mathematics from Rice University.

 Dr. Tie Luo, who had served as the Acting Division Director for DMS since September 11, 2017, returned to his position as DMS Deputy Division Director (DDD), and Dr. Nandini Kannan, who had served as the Acting Deputy Division Director for DMS, returned to her position as a program director in the Statistics program.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2018, its budget is $7.8 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 50,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.
