EHR and NSF’s Big Ideas

February 12, 2019

This letter from EHR’s Assistant Director, Karen Marrongelle, is to alert the EHR research and education community about substantial funding opportunities from NSF relevant to EHR scientists and educators.

Dear EHR Community:

In 2016, NSF unveiled a set of “Big Ideas” – 10 bold, long-term research and process ideas that identify areas for future investment at the frontiers of science and engineering. The Big Ideas represent unique opportunities to position our Nation at the cutting edge of global science and engineering.

There are many opportunities for educational researchers and educators to engage in all 10 of the Big Ideas, and I encourage you to engage with these opportunities, bringing your innovative and exciting concepts to these competitions. Please reach out to EHR program officers to talk further about how your projects might fit within the NSF 10 Big Ideas. We want your bold thinking!

Funding opportunities now available with NSF’s Big Ideas include:

Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier: Core Research (FW-HTF)

Understanding how constantly evolving technologies are actively shaping the lives of workers and how people in turn can shape those technologies, especially in the world of work.

Funding Opportunity: FW-HTF
Full Proposal Deadline Date: March 6, 2019
Program Guidelines: NSF 19-541

Navigating the New Arctic (NNA)

Establishing an observing network of mobile and fixed platforms and tools across the Arctic to document and understand the Arctic's rapid biological, physical, chemical, and social changes.

Funding Opportunity: NNA
Full Proposal Deadline Date: March 4, 2019
Solicitation: NSF 19-511

Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR)

Engaging NSF's research community in the pursuit of fundamental research in data science and engineering, the development of a cohesive, federated, national-scale approach to research data infrastructure, and the development of a 21st-century data-capable workforce.

Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR): Data Science Corps (DSC)

Full Proposal Deadline Date: February 14, 2019
Program Guidelines: NSF 19-518

Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR): Institutes for Data-Intensive Research in Science and Engineering - Ideas Labs (I-DIRSE-IL)

Preliminary Proposal Deadline: March 4, 2019
Solicitation: 19-543

Mid-scale Research Infrastructure

Developing an agile process for funding experimental research capabilities in the mid-scale range.

Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 (Mid-scale RI-1)

Preliminary Proposal Deadline Date: February 19, 2019
Program Guidelines: NSF 19-537

Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-2 (Mid-scale RI-2)

Letter of Intent Deadline Date: February 14, 2019
Program Guidelines: NSF 19-542

More details are expected soon.

Two additional Big Ideas do not currently have open funding opportunities; but could be a source of new solicitations in the future.

NSF INCLUDES: Transforming education and career pathways to help broaden participation in science and engineering.

Understanding the Rules of Life: Elucidating the sets of rules that predict an organism's observable characteristics, its phenotype.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
