Solicitation Revision Notes

  • It is anticipated this is the last year that the ‘Interdisciplinary Research Using Biological Collections’ Competitive Area will be offered. However, in future years, it is expected that research using biological collections could be proposed in other Competitive Areas.
  • There is a new Competitive Area—‘Integrative Research Investigating the Rules of Life Governing Interactions Between Genomes, Environment and Phenotypes’.
  • The eligibility criterion related to tenure in a position requiring a doctoral degree for Competitive Areas  ‘Broadening Participation of Groups Underrepresented in Biology’ and ‘Interdisciplinary Research Using Biological Collections’ has increased to 9 full time months. This criterion applies to the new Competitive Area as well.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2020, its budget is $8.3 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 50,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.
