The NSF is deeply saddened by the death of Anthony “Tony” Janetos on August 6th, following a brief battle with cancer. With a highly-distinguished career in academia, government, and the non-profit sector, Tony was a well-known leader in environmental research, education, and policy and a champion of science. He served the NSF as a member of the Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education from 2011 and as Chair of the committee from 2016. Through his tireless service and thoughtful leadership, his invaluable contributions to the NSF and the environmental research and education community will continue to have impact for many years to come. Tony was also an incredible person and friend and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and his colleagues and students at Boston University at this time.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2019, its budget is $8.1 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 50,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.
