Kontar joins OPP as Science & Technology Policy Fellow

Yekaterina “Katia” Kontar, is OPP’s 2019-2020 America Association for the AAAS - The American Association for the Advancement of Science's Science & Technology Policy Fellow.

Kontar was a Belmont Post-doctoral Science Diplomacy Fellow at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. Her primary research interests are in the field of disaster diplomacy–the cross-section of disaster risk reduction and science diplomacy. She investigates how and why disaster-related activities do and do not influence cooperation in the Arctic region. She has also facilitated disaster-diplomacy efforts in the #Arctic through international collaborations.

She holds a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies: disaster risk communication and policy from the University of Alaska Fairbanks; an MBA in international business and public administration and a Bachelor’s degree in communications: public relations and international studies, both from the University of Findlay.

With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
