Observing the oceans - video of the public webinar

October 1, 2021

On Friday 17th September, the Division of Ocean Sciences held a  public webinar on several NSF supported projects and initiatives as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development “laboratories” program.

The UN Decade “laboratories” are coordinated outreach events  that take place over a three day period, with each “laboratory” being based on a theme or goal of the UN Decade. The recent event was part of the UN Decade’s “predicted ocean” theme and consisted of four presentations aimed at a general public  audience.

The event was introduced by Lindsay Martin (GEO) and the presentations  included:

· Dr Joellen Russel, University of Arizona, on the Global Ocean Biogeochemical array.

· Dr John Trowbridge, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, on the Ocean Observatories Initiative.

· Dr Phoebe Lam, University of California Santa Cruz, on the GEOTRACES program.

· Dr Chris Parsons (OCE), on the National Deep Submergence Facility.

A video of the webinar can be found here. (Note: the size of the video is 600+ MB)

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
