National Science Board to meet February 21 - 22, 2018, in Alexandria VA

The National Science Board (NSB, Board) will meet February 21 – 22, 2018, to address science and engineering policy issues relevant to the National Science Foundation (NSF). Members of the media and the public are invited to open portions of the meeting, which will also be webcast: http://www.tvworldwide.com/events/nsf/180221/. The meeting agenda is available here.

 

Meeting sessions open to the public on February 21:

NSB Plenary (8:15 – 8:45 a.m.)

NSB Chair Maria Zuber will give an overview of major issues and NSF Director France Córdova will give a brief presentation.

Committee on Oversight (8:45 – 9:45 a.m.)

The Committee on Oversight will discuss merit review topics on which the NSB may ask for more granular information. The Inspector General will give an overview of current NSF management challenges. The agency’s outside auditing firm will present highlights from the unmodified opinion resulting from the FY 2017 financial statement audit, and results of the Federal Information Security Management Act audit. NSF’s Chief Financial Officer will give an overview of major events taking place in the financial area.

Committee on External Engagement (9:45 – 10:30 a.m.)

The Committee on External Engagement will discuss plans for the Board’s next listening session to hear from stakeholders in a different part of the country. In addition, the committee will discuss the next hosting of a Member of Congress at a Board member institution, and expanding engagement activities to the private sector and state policymakers. This session will also include an overview of outreach activities for the 2018 Science and Engineering Indicators report.

Committee on Awards and Facilities (10:45 – 11:30 a.m.)

The A&F Chair will provide updates on several ongoing A&F projects and the committee will discuss a written update on the National Ecological Observatory Network’s community engagement plan. In addition, NSB members who recently visited Antarctica will talk about their experience and impressions.

Committee on National Science and Engineering Policy (1:00 – 2:00 p.m.)

The Committee on National S&E Policy will brief the Board on the major themes and outcome from the SEP one-day retreat and discuss potential topics for a second policy companion statement to Indicators 2018.

Committee on Strategy (2:00 – 2:30 p.m.)

The Committee on Strategy will hear updates on the FY 2018 Appropriations and the FY 2019 Budget Request, which were released February 12.

 

Meeting sessions open to the public February 22:

Skilled Technical Workforce Task Force (10:30 – 11:15 a.m.)

The Task Force will host a guest presentation by representatives from Google, Inc. on the company’s “Grow with Google” program.

National Science Board Plenary (11:15 – 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 – 2:00 p.m.)

Authors of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences will give a presentation on the Academy’s report, “The Future of Undergraduate Education during the first plenary session.

In the second plenary, the Board will hear brief remarks and receive Open Committee Reports. NSF Director, Dr. Córdova, will discuss her recent testimony before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which focused on NSF’s implementation of the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act.

In a closed plenary session on February 22, the Board will vote on a resolution for the proposed creation of NSF’s National Center for Optical-Infrared Astronomy (NCOA).  In the plenary executive closed session on February 22, the NSB will appoint the Election Committee for the May 2018 Board Elections.
