AAAS STP Fellow
Directorate for Education & Human Resources
Division of Graduate Education
Class of 2019-2020

Marie Harton joins the NSF as a 2019-2020 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Division of Graduate Education within the Directorate for Education and Human Resources. Prior to being a fellow, Marie was an interdisciplinary research scientist with expertise in cell engineering and cancer systems biology. She received her B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University, respectively. As a graduate student, Marie used cell engineering to develop biotechnology in yeast for the directed evolution of enhanced biomolecules. As a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Cancer Institute, she used single cell fluorescence microscopy and mathematical modeling to determine how the dynamic expression of the p53 tumor suppressor impacts its target gene activation. Marie is also a STEM education advocate and passionate about developing, implementing, and evaluating programs to engage and retain underrepresented communities in both STEM and healthcare careers.
