Vandana Janeja is a AAAS fellow in the Office of the Assistant Director at the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering. In her role as a fellow, working with the Senior Data Science Advisor, she is contributing to the Big Data, Data Science and Harnessing the Data Revolution efforts at NSF. She is currently on a sabbatical from the Information Systems department at University of Maryland Baltimore County where she is an Associate Professor.
Her core research is in the area of Big Data Analytics with a focus on data mining and anomaly detection. Her research interest lies at the intersection of multiple domains with heterogeneous data where the innovation, churn and friction happens. As a policy area, she has a keen interest in the ethics of Data Science. Her research, which has been extensively published, has been funded through federal, state and private organizations including NSF, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland State Highway Administration and CISCO. She is an enthusiastic educator and is committed to excellence in teaching and establishing student careers. This has been a key focus for her in guiding several Ph.D. and Masters students through their research careers.
She holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology and an M.B.A from Rutgers University, and a Masters in Computer Science from New Jersey Institute of Technology. Her time away from work is spent in the joys of raising two wonderful boys, and exploring art through sketching, photography, creative writing and calligraphy.
