Dr. Philip Ko
AAAS STP Fellow
Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences
National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics
Class of 2019-2020

Phil Ko is a 2019-2020 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, based in the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE). There, he works with the Science and Engineering Indicators team (SEI). Science and Engineering Indicators (Indicators) is a congressionally mandated report that provides high-quality quantitative information on the U.S. and international science and engineering enterprise. The report is prepared by the NCSES under the guidance of the National Science Board. Phil helps with communication and outreach efforts as the report undergoes a “re-imagining” of its format.

Phil earned his PhD in cognitive psychology and neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and completed postdoctoral work at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His research focused on how visual attention and memory change with different states of awareness, aging, and dementia. This research has been published in top-tier journals, book chapters, and the popular press. He has earned competitive grants and held teaching positions at Vanderbilt University and Austin Peay State University. In addition to research and teaching, Phil’s work in science news writing and community events has helped him transition into his new role in science communication and outreach.
