Office of Polar Programs
Class of 2019-2020

Dr. Yekaterina (Katia) Kontar is a 2019-2020 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Polar Programs, Directorate for Geosciences. She joins NSF from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where she conducted research and facilitated science diplomacy efforts relevant to disaster risk reduction and resilience in the Arctic. Dedicated to bridging the gap between disaster resilience research and implementation, Katia has facilitated numerous collaborative projects between scientists, practitioners, local knowledge holders, and policymakers. Katia’s work is recognized by the international disaster research community, which is proven by her extensive list of peer-reviewed publications ranging from journal articles to monographs. She is a frequent speaker and session convener at international scientific and policy conferences, and an active member in international scientific and educational organizations (American Geophysical Union, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, and University of the Arctic), and International Intergovernmental Organizations (e.g., Arctic Council). Katia holds a Ph.D. in science communication and policy from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (2017). Prior to starting her doctoral research, Katia fostered scientific literacy among K-12 students and promoted Antarctic research and discovery as an Education and Outreach Associate and Multimedia Specialist at the ANDRILL (Antarctic Geological Drilling) Program.
