General Opportunities for support of international research partners

Below is a list of general funding opportunities that are SEPARATE from the INFEWS solicitation (NSF 18-545), which may provide opportunities to support international partners collaborating with US researchers on an INFEWS proposal. The list below also includes some links to identify researchers in other countries already working on food/energy/water nexus topics. This list of opportunities is not intended to be comprehensive, but does include many countries and funding agencies with whom NSF-supported researchers and NSF have a history of collaboration. This information is intended to assist U.S. researchers in developing international partnerships relevant to research on the food/energy/water nexus. Additional information may be added in the future.

Belmont Forum is a partnership of funding organizations, international science councils, and regional consortia committed to the advancement of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary science. Forum operations are guided by the Belmont Challenge, a vision document that encourages: International transdisciplinary research providing knowledge for understanding, mitigating and adapting to global environmental change. In 2017 the Belmont Forum members supported a call on Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative (SUGI)/ Food-Water-Energy Nexus. Future calls may include the food/energy/water nexus. Please visit the Belmont Forum opportunities page to learn more. The NSF regularly participates in the Belmont Forum and funding can be available for US investigators.

European Commission Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI) - Water, also known as the Water JPI, has a 2018 Joint Call, Closing the Water Cycle Gap - Sustainable Management of Water Resources in which a number of European, Middle Eastern and African countries are participating. Pre-proposals are anticipated to be due mid-April 2018. NSF is not currently part of the JPI framework and this opportunity does not currently provide funding support for US investigators.

European Commission Joint Programming Initiative - Agriculture, food Security and Climate Change (FACCE), also known as the FACCE JPI, has a current call called ERA-Net SusCrop that includes 18 countries in Europe, as well as Canada and Turkey. SusCrop pre-proposals are anticipated to be due early April 2018. NSF is not currently part of the JPI framework and this opportunity does not currently provide funding support for US investigators.

The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) with 15 participating states around the Mediterranean, anticipates the launch in Feb. 2018 of several calls related to water management, farming systems, and agro-food value chain. NSF is not part of PRIMA and this opportunity does not provide funding support for US investigators.

USAID Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) provides support to researchers in developing countries who partner with US-based researchers who have active, current awards from NSF or eight other USG funders. Country-specific and region-specific calls often focus on water and food topics. USAID-PEER is NOT a source of funding for US-based researchers.

Country-specific, independent funding opportunities

The funding opportunities listed below are SEPARATE from the INFEWS solicitation (NSF 18-545), but may provide opportunities to support international partners collaborating with US researchers on an INFEWS proposal.

A US NSF / NSF-China Dear Colleague Letter for joint US-China research proposals in 2017 supported teams conducting research on environmental sustainability themes related to Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems (INFEWS: U.S.-China). An anticipated 2018 DCL may also focus on food/energy/water nexus topics.

US-Egypt Joint Fund provides support to teams of US and Egyptian scientists working together on a range of research topics. Agriculture, energy and water are often among the research areas supported by this competitive fund.

The German Research Foundation, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), supports research in all branches of science and the humanities. Eligible researchers, based in Germany, interested in investigating the food, energy, water nexus are welcome to apply as part of the DFG’s competitive research funding process. DFG is not a source of funding for US-based investigators.

Researchers based in Germany working on topics relevant to the food, energy, water may be identified via keyword searches of the GEPRIS database, which lists research projects funded by the DFG.

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan will consider requests for supplemental support made by existing Taiwanese grantees who partner with NSF applicants. If an NSF proposal that includes cooperation with a Taiwanese researcher is funded by NSF, the Taiwanese researcher’s request will be considered based on review results. MOST, Taiwan provides information on supplemental funding to Taiwanese researchers. MOST, Taiwan is not a source of funding for US-based investigators.

INFEWS International Co-Funding Partnerships

There are no international collaborative co-funding opportunities available under the INFEWS solicitation at this time.
