Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Campus Cyberinfrastructure - Data, Networking, and Innovation (CC*DNI), Solicitation NSF 15-534

  1. What does the requirement for a Campus Cyber-Infrastructure plan mean for proposals in Area 6, "Regional Coordination and Partnership in Advanced Networking?"
  2. Who can submit a proposal to the "Network Design and Implementation for the Small Institutions" area?
  3. Most program areas discourage current awardees in the CC*IIE program area from submitting a CC*DNI proposal in that same program area. Does that rule apply for a CC*NIE awardee?
  4. For Data Infrastructure Building Blocks - Multi-Campus/Multi-Institution Model Implementations (program area # 1) do proposed budget have to be at uniform annual levels per year(such as $1,000,000 per year) or may the requested annual budgets vary by year?

  1. What does the requirement for a Campus Cyber-Infrastructure plan mean for proposals in Area 6, "Regional Coordination and Partnership in Advanced Networking?"

NSF expects that proposals submitted to this area will have a Cyberinfrastructure (CI) plan as a roadmap and vision for the cyber-infrastructure connecting and supporting the region's institutions. NSF expects that proposing regional entities will have strong ties to the institutions that they serve and that the Regional CI plan will reflect the shared infrastructure needs of those institutions. For example, the CI plan for a regional entity might include material on the present and expected future computing and communication needs of the institutions being served by the regional and how these needs will be reflected in a plan for an evolving regional CI.

  2. Who can submit a proposal to the "Network Design and Implementation for the Small Institutions" area?

Universities and colleges are eligible to submit proposals in this area. NSF expects the proposal to reflect their institution's fundamental challenges in research and education networking and how, as a small institution, they are under-resourced in this area.

  3. Most program areas discourage current awardees in the CC*IIE program area from submitting a CC*DNI proposal in that same program area. Does that rule apply for a CC*NIE awardee?

Yes. CC*DNI Area #2 and #4 have appeared in all 4 years of the Campus Cyberinfrastructure program. The program's name has changed slightly over those years. Initially called "Campus Cyberinfrastructure - Network Infrastructure and Engineering Program (CC*NIE)" in 2012 (NSF 12-541) and 2013 (NSF 13-530), the program was called "Campus Cyberinfrastructure - Infrastructure, Innovation and Engineering Program (CC*IIE)" in 2014 (NSF 14-521). In CC*DNI, both area #2 (Data Driven Networking Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher) and area #4 (Network Integration and Applied Innovation) have remained core elements of the program. If you are the Awardee of an active award in either area, NSF discourages you from applying again to that area. An Awardee refers to the institution - therefore institutions with an active award in one of those program areas are discouraged from applying to that program area again this year.

  4. For Data Infrastructure Building Blocks - Multi-Campus/Multi-Institution Model Implementations (program area # 1) do proposed budget have to be at uniform annual levels per year(such as $1,000,000 per year) or may the requested annual budgets vary by year?

Requested annual budgets may vary in a manner appropriate to support the execution of activities as proposed, up to the identified $5,000,000 total budget value for up to 5 years period of performed activities.
