NSF 17-095

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) NSF 17-094: Changes to the Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (DDIG) Program in the Directorate for Biological Sciences

  1. I already have a DDIG award. Is that award going to be cut?

No, this decision does not affect DDIGs that are already awarded. Current awardees should contact their cognizant program director if they have additional questions.

  2. What other opportunities are there for support for graduate research and where do I find more information about them?

The NSF continues to support graduate research through the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) and the NSF Research Traineeship Program (NRT). BIO will continue to support graduate student participation in PI-led research across its programs. Proposals for conferences are encouraged to include support for graduate and postdoctoral trainee travel and attendance.

  3. Will BIO Divisions offer DDIG support in the future?

NSF frequently changes the funding opportunities available to the scientific community, and though we do not anticipate resurrecting the DDIG program in the near term, this does not preclude a similar program in the future.
