NSF 21-074Dear Colleague Letter: NSF/SBE Participating in the Trans-Atlantic Platform Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World Call for Proposals
April 20, 2021
Dear Colleagues:
The purpose of this Dear Colleague Letter is to announce that the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (NSF/SBE) is participating in the Trans-Atlantic Platform Call for Proposals, Recovery, Renewal, and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World (T-AP RRR). T-AP RRR is a grant competition that will support international collaborative research projects that address key gaps in our understanding of the complex and dynamic societal effects of COVID-19.
BACKGROUND
The COVID-19 pandemic is a major crisis that touches on all aspects of health, social, economic, political, and cultural life. From major disruptions to the global economy to the dislocation of normal interpersonal relationships, no society, business, community, family or individual has escaped its impacts. As illustrated by such recent initiatives as the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery: Leveraging the Power of Science for a More Equitable, Resilient and Sustainable Future, an effective post pandemic recovery must be strongly informed by insights and evidence from social sciences and humanities.
SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY
T-AP RRR will support international collaborative research projects that advance our understanding of the complex and dynamic societal effects of COVID-19. This understanding, in turn, should advance knowledge of how to mitigate the negative societal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and support recovery and renewal in a post-pandemic world. Specifically, T-AP RRR invites research proposals that address one or more of the following challenges: reducing inequalities and vulnerabilities; building a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable society; fostering democratic governance and participation; advancing responsible and inclusive digital innovation; and/or ensuring effective and accurate communication and media.
Proposals requesting NSF funding must fit within the scientific purview of the NSF Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). Proposers are strongly encouraged to consult SBE's programs and contact the cognizant program director (identified below) to discuss their proposal's fit within NSF/SBE's purview prior to submission of the international team proposal to the T-AP RRR Call.
INTERNATIONAL TEAM COMPOSITION
T-AP RRR will support collaborative research teams from four continents: Africa (Republic of South Africa); Europe (Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom); North America (Canada, the United States); and South America (Brazil and Colombia). Teams must include researchers based in at least three participating T-AP RRR countries and must include partners from both sides of the Atlantic, i.e., from Europe/Africa and the Americas. Research partners will receive funding from their own national funding agencies for projects of up to 36 months in duration.
PROPOSAL PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION
The full T-AP RRR Call for Proposals, details about eligibility, and instructions for preparing and submitting proposals are available on the T-AP RR website. International team proposals must first be submitted via the SAGe system hosted by the São Paulo Research Foundation. The link to the SAGe system can be found on the T-AP RRR website. The submission deadline is July 12, 2021.
Following panel review and Program Officer deliberations, Principal Investigators (PIs) whose proposals have been recommended for funding through NSF will be invited to submit a copy of the original proposal, plus additional documents required for all NSF proposals, to NSF's FastLane system, Research.gov, or Grants.gov.
ABOUT THE TRANS-ATLANTIC PLATFORM
The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) for Social Sciences and Humanities is an unprecedented collaboration among social sciences and humanities research funders from both sides of the Atlantic. T-AP aims to enhance the ability of funders, research organizations and researchers to engage in transnational dialogue and collaboration. Among other activities, it works to identify common challenges and emerging priorities in social science and humanities research. T-AP also facilitates the formation of networks within the social sciences and humanities and helps connect them with other disciplines.
Inquiries about this opportunity should be directed to the NSF program director for the T-AP Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post Pandemic World funding opportunity, Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong at kgyimahb@nsf.gov.
Sincerely,
Dr. Arthur Lupia, Assistant Director
Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE)
