Title : Packet radio tests, Lake Fryxell Type : Antarctic EAM NSF Org: OD / OPP Date : January 09, 1991 File : opp93014 DIVISION OF POLAR PROGRAMS OFFICE OF SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH 202/357-7766 MEMORANDUM Date: January 9, 1991 From: Environmental Officer, DPP Subject: Environmental Action Memorandum (Satellite Packet Radio Tests at Lake Fryxell) To: Files S.7 (Environment) During the 1990-1991 research season, the Naval Support Force Antarctica (NSFA) was asked to participate in Satellite Packet Radio Tests from an antarctic location. NSFA's proposal for participation indicated that the Lake Fryxell Field Camp could serve as the location of the tests and the proposal initially appeared to indicate that possible construction or significant increases in personnel at the site might be a result of such participation. The Environmental Officer tasked the Electronics Engineer with learning about the extent and requirements of the proposed tests at Lake Fryxell. The Electronics Engineer was briefed by NSFA's Communications Department and it was learned that: o one additional person will reside at the camp for a period of 7-10 days; and o the activity consists of operating a radio and will be confined to the existing camp structures. The activity is not expected, therefore, to result in significant impact to the environment at the camp. Sidney Draggan cc: Safety, Environment and Health Officer, DPP Electronics Engineer, DPP
