Title : Establishmnet of CARA-effects Type : Antarctic EAM NSF Org: OD / OPP Date : October 22, 1991 File : opp93037 DIVISION OF POLAR PROGRAMS OFFICE OF THE ENVIRONMENT 202/357-7766 MEMORANDUM Date: October 22, 1991 From: Environmental Officer, DPP Subject: Environmental Action Memorandum (Evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessment and Finding on Establishment of the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica) To: Manager, Polar Atmospheric Sciences Program, DPP Files (S.7 - Environment) The Environmental Officer requested that Dr. Doyal A. Harper, Principal Investigator for the National Science Foundation's Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA), prepare an environmental impact assessment on establishment of CARA facilities at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica. On October 16, 1991, the Environmental Officer received the requested assessment. The Environmental Officer believes that the subject assessment clearly identifies and considers alternatives to the establish- ment of CARA, the potential impacts of CARA on the antarctic environment near Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and on-going environmental management actions needed to prevent or mitigate unnecessary impacts to that environment. Also, the Environmental Officer believes that from the information contained in the assessment it is unlikely that the installation, operation and maintenance of CARA's facilities will have more than minor or transitory effects on the environment near Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
