My research and education accomplishments include data science graduate program development, genotype- environment quantitative genetics, broader impacts resource dissemination, and collaborative development of biological data analysis infrastructure for democratic access to computational resources. I have substantial experience in multidisciplinary research and with large collaborative teams. I have administrative experience in academic graduate program development and in leading the scientific and logistic teams for scientific conferences and grants programs. I am especially proud to have been awarded the first UNCW Mentor award.
My biology research focuses on plant genotype-environment interaction genetics. My recent research reassignment with industry colleagues kick-started my newest project, development of genotype-environment profiling software and analysis of large public data sets. I recruit and train students in large-scale complex data management, including data product and code management, code profiling, validation test design, and project management. I really enjoy conveying the excitement inherent in answering new biology questions to my computationally-focused students and colleagues, and creating teams of students with biological, computational and statistics expertise. Our research has been published in computer science, statistics, and biology journals.
My interest in validated, scalable data analysis has intertwined with my interests in collaborative, effective and efficient broader impacts activities. For example, I have worked with a computational team to design and populate broader impacts content management system; my students and I developed the automated tagging and did the resource curation, so now PIs can find relevant resources for their future use via recommendations. I recently worked with colleagues to develop and deliver an online workshop for new teaching assistants, as training new TAs in active learning and lesson planning early in their careers is a rewarding way to magnify our impact.
