Biography:

Dr. David J. Verardo is Acting Deputy Division Director in the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences in the Geosciences Directorate. 

Since joining the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2000, Dr. Verardo has led the Paleoclimate Program, served as the Head of the Atmosphere Section, and has been involved in a vairiety of  cross-directorate research activities at the NSF. 

Dr. Verardo joined the NSF after serving as Deputy to Dr. Robert Watson, Chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for the Special Report on Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry. The IPCC team subsequently was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. Verardo served as a Congressional Science Fellow in the Office of U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon working on science-based carbon sequestration strategies and nuclear waste contamination and disposal issues.  The fellowship was organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and sponsored by the Geological Society of America (GSA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Dr. Verardo has served on the faculties of the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Communicty College, Long Island University, Hofstra University, as well as the technical staff of the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. He is currently an adjunct professor at George Mason University

Dr. Verardo served six years in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Boatswains Mate and Coxswain in charge of search and rescue vessels.

Dr. Verardo previously served as the President and Executive Director of the American Fdederation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 3403 at the NSF, NEA, NEH, USGS, USDA (NIFA,ERS), IMLS, and ADF.

Dr. Verardo holds an A.S. from Nassau Community College, B.A. in Geology from C.W. Post College of Long Island University, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, and a J.D. from Concord Law School.  He is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute.
