Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER)


Dr. Lara Campbell is a Program Director in the Office of International Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. Her portfolio is Africa, the Near East and South Asia (ANESA), with her efforts especially focused on the Middle East and Africa. Lara is also serves as the Program Director in charge of NSF's collaboration with the USAID-funded Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) Program. She is also OISE's Liaison to the NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) and to the NSF Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE).

Prior to coming to NSF Lara served as Director of the CUBRC Center for International Science and Technology Advancement, where she developed, managed and supported international cooperative research activities funded by USAID, the Department of State and the Department of Defense doing work in the Middle East, countries of the former Soviet Union and Russia. Lara is particularly interested in understanding the interrelationships that help connect research and education to entrepreneurship and from 2008-2009 she was a Fulbright Scholar conducting regional research on innovation development in the Middle East (in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan). Prior to working for CUBRC, Lara was part of the Research Competitiveness Program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science where she led teams providing programmatic peer review advice and guidance on science and technology infrastructure improvement and capacity building in the U.S. Lara holds a BA in chemistry from Rice University in Houston, Texas and a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. She was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin and conducted postdoctoral research in the Lab of Biochemistry of the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
