Biography:

Peter M. Anderson is a Program Manager for Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer Our Future, an interdisciplinary NSF program that spans several divisions and aims to accelerate the design, discovery, development, and deployment of materials for biological, electronic, photonic, structural, and other societal needs. He is at NSF on an IPA assignment and is a Prof. in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU). He received a ScB degree in Engineering from Brown University and ScM and PhD degrees in Applied Sciences from Harvard University. Following a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Cambridge University (UK), he joined OSU. He has authored/coauthored over one hundred fifty articles on mechanical behavior of bulk, thin film, and nanoscale materials, including a chapter on crystal plasticity in Fundamentals of Metal Forming and a comprehensive set of lecture material for the introductory textbook, Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction. More recently, he coauthored with John Hirth and Jens Lothe the 3rd edition of Theory of Dislocations. He has held visiting positions at Brown University, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Ruhr-Universit├Ąt Bochum, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he was Bernd T. Matthias Scholar. He is a recipient of an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, three-time recipient of the Boyer Award for Teaching Innovation, recipient of the Lumley Research Award, and fellow of ASM International. He recently completed a 4-year term as Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at OSU. He enjoys cycling, running, hiking, and other outdoor activities as well as home renovation and energy conservation technologies.
